Lutheran Social Services receives $10,000 donation from the Verizon Foundation to support ADVANCE Passages program
As part of its commitment to help stop the cycle of domestic violence, the Verizon Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant to Lutheran Social Services of South Central Pennsylvania (LSS) to support its ADVANCE Passages program. Accepting the check on behalf of LSS was Joseph Studivant, director of the Health, Education and Life Enrichment (H.E.L.P.) Center.
Passages is an educational program that seeks to meet the needs of young men aged 16-22 who have been identified by the criminal justice system, counselors or school and community caseworkers as having been abusive in domestic or dating relationships. The 16-week psycho-educational program addresses healthy relationships, sexual abuse, sexual respect, authentic masculinity, substance abuse, gender roles and the role of various media in constructing masculinity and relationships. The program, which uses concepts and tenets of the Men Can Stop Rape Men of Strength Clubs, places a strong emphasis on accountability while fostering personal growth.
“In 2010, we were able to pilot the ADVANCE Passages program with financial support from the United Way of York,” explained Studivant. “Now, with the added generosity of the Verizon Foundation we will be able to underwrite a part-time facilitator and purchase program materials and supplies so we can serve another 45 young males at no cost to the participant.”
“Verizon is proud to improve the quality of life for young men in South Central Pennsylvania by empowering them with innovative tools and resources,” said Christopher Brennan, director of External Affairs for Verizon Pennsylvania. “We’re investing in programs, such as our partnership with Lutheran Social Services to reach those in need and touch people’s lives by focusing on education, health and family safety in the 21st century. We are hopeful that participants in the ADVANCE Passages program will find strength and courage in pursuit of a healthier future.”
