Stephen Ministry
Having someone listen to us is a basic human need. That need is especially acute
when we feel lonely, stressed or in pain. Stephen Ministry, an LSS community outreach
service, enables volunteers to listen to those in need with care and compassion
and assists people to take the small steps to renewal in life.
Stephen Ministers, (named after St. Stephen, the early Church's first lay deacon)
are loving and caring people who are willing to listen and be there when you are
going through a difficult time.
Stephen Ministers are trained lay people, not professional counselors, who undergo
more than 50 hours of training, based solidly on Biblical testimony and drawing
from the best tools of the health and psychological sciences.
Stephen Ministers are trained lay people who provide ongoing Christian care to
people experiencing a wide range of life needs or crises, including:
-
The hospitalized
-
The terminally ill and their families
-
Shut-in and homebound individuals
-
The grieving
-
Those undergoing life's transitions
-
The elderly
-
Families facing a job crisis
-
Those with disabilities
-
The lonely
-
Those in spiritual crisis
The care offered by Stephen Ministers enables those who receive care to grow
in a deeper relationship with their Lord and encourages them to care for others,
to "love as they have been loved". The Stephen Ministers also experience growth
as they apply their caring skills to other important relationships, enriching
their whole lives.
