Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing

The LSS Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing is a great resource for the community. We offer many specialized services with knowledgeable staff. We strive to provide outstanding quality for our Interpreting services, Sign Language classes, Deaf Awareness, Advocacy and Educational Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Our Services

Interpreting Services

There is an ever-increasing demand for interpreting services throughout the United States. Employers and service providers recognize the deaf or hard of hearing person’s legal right to have an interpreter present in daily life situations. Interpreters are provided for legal, medical, religious and job-related services.

The Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides excellent interpreter services to assure communication between deaf or hard of hearing persons and hearing persons in these instances.

Sign Language Classes

Classes in sign language emphasizing American Sign Language (ASL) are held three times a year in September, January and April. The classes cover a nine-week period.

Three levels are offered: Beginner I, II, and Conversational Sign. Those interested in enrolling are encouraged to register at least one month prior to the time a class is scheduled to begin. Applications are available at the office.

Special Sign Language courses emphasizing ASL are also offered, schedule permitting. Businesses and organizations interested in on-site Mini-Sign Language classes are encouraged to contact the Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Deaf Awareness

The Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides speakers for community groups, especially those that offer services to deaf or hard of hearing persons. These speakers help the hearing community to understand the unique challenges faced by those who are deaf, as well as to recognize the abilities members of the deaf and hard of hearing community have to offer.

Advocacy

The Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing also provides advocacy as needed for the deaf and hard of hearing community as well as on an individual basis. Our office is available to the public, providing information about deaf and hard of hearing, laws, interpreters, communication needs, equipment, etc.

We offer assistance to deaf and hard of hearing persons to help secure state and generic resources. We encourage individuals to learn to navigate various state and federal systems, so that they can become their own advocates.

We strive to be on the cutting edge of knowledge relating to deaf and hard of hearing culture, ensuring that our staff members are efficient advocates within our local community.

Specialized Library

Our specialized library represents the area’s most comprehensive source of information on the deaf community. Books and DVDs are available on deafness, deaf culture, sign language and other related topics.

Services to Persons Who Are Growing Deaf in Their Adult Years

The Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing is a highly respected reservoir of information on assistive listening devices, signaling systems, and related equipment for the hearing impaired. In addition, we help channel individuals to local support groups for the deaf.

Educational Services for the Deaf Community

Educational opportunities that deal with personal rights, consumer protection, the law and other areas of concern for deaf and hard of hearing adults are offered through the Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

TTYs and other Equipment

Communications equipment to assist the deaf and hard of hearing is available on a loan basis. Please call the Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing for details.
